50 needles, cotton thread

‘Hemmed’ was an installation I made in which the passing of white cotton ran through fifty eyes of fifty needles. I used one continuous lengh of cotton, tied at one end to the beginning to create a never-ending thread. I inserted needles into the walls around a room, the needle acted as a channel for the thread to be passed through. The thread passed through each eye of the needle, surrounding the viewer to trap them delicately in the centre of this single stitch. The thread acted like a fragile fence: a sewn boxing-ring that challenged the viewer’s sight.

On a couple of occasions, where the viewer failed to notice anything, another sense was evoked- touch. The cotton which stood proud from the wall and cut off the corners, brushed upon the viewer’s shoulder as though it was asking for attention. The delicate tickle from the thread was enough to capture and convince the viewer that there was in fact something there to be seen. This was a point of intrest that was unexpected andunforseen by me.
